TSARS AND MUSES: OPERA AT THE RUSSIAN COURT

23 December 2025

On the 9th and 30th of November the Armory Chamber of the Moscow Kremlin will host a music festival Tsars and Muses: Opera at the Russian Court. It will be held under the motto Opera for the Glory of the Fatherland! and will introduce visitors to vocal and instrumental music of the 18th - first quarter of the 19th century.

In the year of the 215th anniversary of the Armory Chamber, founded as a museum by the decree of the Emperor Alexander I, the Music Festival invites guests to plunge into the era of Alexander I and find out how it was reflected in Russian music, how it influenced the opera works that were created at the court of the Russian emperor.

On the 9th of November the Pratum Integrum orchestra will perform with the program Towards the Enlightened Monarch, or From the Grand Duke to the Emperor.

The festival will continue on the 30th of November with the costume opera-pasticcio Alexander and Elizabeth. It includes musical works by composers close to the Russian imperial court at the beginning of the 19th century. Opera-pasticcio is a genre of musical art that was popular at the turn of the 18th-19th centuries. It is a mixture of different arias, which is united by a common plot.

The main idea of this year's music festival is to show how the era of Alexander I was reflected in Russian music and what influence it had on the development of plots and the style of opera works created at the Russian imperial court at the end of the 18th - first quarter of the 19th century.
