Kaliningrad

Kaliningrad is the westernmost point of Russia, 1300 km from Moscow. The region is surrounded on all sides by other countries - Belarus, Poland, Lithuania and the Baltic Sea coastline. In recent years, interest in Kaliningrad and its environs has only grown, thanks to the ancient architecture, the untouched nature of the Baltic Sea coast, the sea climate, healing mineral waters, peat therapeutic mud, local amber, sandy beaches, two freshwater bays, rivers, lakes, sand dunes and a lot more.

The Curonian Spit is the sandy spit on the shores of the Baltic Sea, so unusual that it has become a kind of open-air museum and is included in the famous UNESCO World Heritage List. It is worth visiting the Curonian Spit not only for the sake of a wonderful beach holiday, but also for its sights: Korolevsky Bor forest, Lake Chayka, the “Dancing Forest” and spectacular sand dunes.

In Kaliningrad itself, it is worth visiting the historical centre, over which the bulk of the Cathedral rises. There are no services in the temple, it has long been turned into a museum, but the atmosphere of the Gothic cathedral has been completely preserved. The restored building hosts organ concerts, classical and modern music.

But the main symbol of the Kaliningrad region is undoubtedly the sun stone - amber. It is not surprise that this is where the country's only museum of this stone is located. The Amber Museum is located in the Don Tower, left over from the old system of city fortifications. Amber in all its glory is presented here - stones from the smallest to huge (over 4 kg), from white to almost opaque black. In the museum you can see stones with inclusions of ancient insects, photographs and models of amber quarries and, of course, fragments of the old Amber Room from the Catherine Palace in St. Petersburg that disappeared without a trace.

Kaliningrad is a perfect destination for a short getaway or for a stop during a journey around the neighbouring countries.
