84TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RUBY STARS OF THE KREMLIN

02 June 2026

84 years ago the new ruby stars were lit on the towers of the Moscow Kremlin. This event symbolized the final establishment of socialism in the USSR. The first stars appeared over the Kremlin in October 1935. They were installed instead of the two-headed imperial eagles. They were massive five-pointed structures made of stainless steel and red copper, with a hammer and sickle - the traditional symbol of the unity of workers and peasants. The flaws of the first stars were discovered quickly: because of the climate the precious stones dimmed, and the stars themselves, according to the general opinion, turned out to be disproportionately large - by their appearance and size, they violated the architectural ensemble of the Kremlin. In May 1937, it was decided to install new, ruby stars on the five towers. Specialists from 20 enterprises of ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, machine-building, electrical and glass industries, research and design institutes worked on the creation of new stars.

The ruby stars on the Kremlin towers shine day and night. Throughout history, they were turned off only twice - when a historical film was filmed in the Kremlin in 1997 and in 1941 during the Great Patriotic War, when the enemy came close to Moscow.

The Kremlin stars remain one of the most recognized symbols of Moscow and Russia in general, its decoration and the hallmark of the capital.
