02 June 2026

The Mariinsky Theatre plans to host a series of musical festivals dedicated to outstanding Russian composers which will take the audience through the cities associated with the names and works of the composers.

Tikhvin, a small town located 200 km from Saint-Petersburg, will become a permanent venue for the festival dedicated to composer Rimsky-Korsakov. The opera festival in the small homeland of the famous musician is a sign of admiration and gratitude for his work. From now on, festivals dedicated to Rimsky-Korsakov will be held in Tikhvin annually.

On March 18 on the birthday of the eminent composer, the opera troupe and musicians of the Mariinsky Theatre will present the opera Christmas Eve. Valery Gergiev, general director and artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre, will be the conductor. The performance will take place on the stage of the Rimsky-Korsakov Palace of Culture in Tikhvin.

The event was timed not only to the birthday of the composer, but also to the final works in his house-museum. The opening of the new expositions is scheduled for the next year. In the future, additional musical performances are planned to be held in Tikhvin. But the first festival will be entirely dedicated to the music of Rimsky-Korsakov.
