MOSCOW CITY DAY

10 April 2023

Moscow City Day is an annual city-wide celebration in Moscow. Celebrated on the first Saturday of September. The main celebrations are traditionally held on Tverskaya Street, Red Square, Poklonnaya Hill and Sparrow Hills, festivities and concerts are organized throughout the city. The City Day ends with a festive fireworks.

For the first time celebrations of the City Day were held in Moscow in 1847 in honor of the 700th anniversary of the city. This year, Moscow's parks and museums celebrated the capital's birthday for the 873rd time, albeit not on the usual scale in the face of the pandemic. The celebration of the City Day took place traditionally on the first weekend of autumn, on 5th and 6th September. In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, it was decided not to hold large-scale festivities, including the festival on Tverskaya Street. Local events were held only at venues and in cultural institutions where safety measures can be observed. The theme of the celebration was “Museum Moscow”. The design of city parks and district sites reminded of the famous museum exhibitions of the capital.
