On February 23 Russia and a number of other post-Soviet countries celebrate Defender of the Fatherland Day. This holiday in Russia is considered the day of military glory for men and women who participated in the defense of the Fatherland and has been celebrated for over 100 years. The holiday is held with parades of equipment and troops, accompanied by concerts, pyrotechnic shows and other events that are held not only in Moscow, but also in many cities.

Traditionally, in the daytime, a solemn ceremony is held at the walls of the Kremlin, wreaths are laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Representatives of the authorities, headed by the president gather in the Alexander Garden. Usually a minute of silence begins, after which a hymn sounds, an honor guard marches on.

Even before the revolution, there was a memorable day in Russia, which was dedicated to all soldiers. It correlated with the Day of St. George the Victorious, who was considered the patron saint of the Russian army. The presentation of certificates and commemorative signs to soldiers became the beginning of the tradition of presenting gifts to conscripts on February 23, which continues to this day.
