This is the second most important museum of European art in Russia. It was founded in 1912. Its first exhibits were copies of ancient statuary, thought indispensable for the education of art students. In 1924 the Soviet government decided to enrich the collection of the museum by transferring here the finest objects of art from the State Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg) and from the nationalized private collections. The museum has a very diverse and ample collection that includes objects from antiquity till present times.
