Russia offers a great variety of entertainment for any taste and budget. Those who love classic music can take an opportunity to visit theatres and concert halls. Russian opera and ballet are famous in the world for over 100 years. Music festivals play a special role in the cultural life of Russia. The largest and the most renowned is the International Arts Festival "Stars of the White Nights” held since 1993 in the Mariinsky Theatre under the initiative of Valery Gergiev, a prominent conductor. In Russia you can see everything from a musical to a tragedy in numerous theatres and theatre studios. Besides, your visit to Russia would be incomplete without seeing a local folk show.

St. Petersburg

Mariinsky Theatre

Mariinsky Theatre is one of the leading musical theaters in Russia and in the world. Operas and ballets created by great Russian and foreign composers were staged here for more than 200 years, starting with the opera "A Life for the Tsar” by Mikhail Glinka, that was staged in this theatre for the first time in 1860. Valery Gergiev who is the chief artistic director of the theatre is known as one of the best conductors in the world.

Mariinsky Theatre has two stages: the historical stage and the New Mariinsky stage. The New stage is the second part of the theatre complex together with the original 1860 Mariinsky Theatre building and the 2007 Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall.

The New stage can be described as modern and ambitious project, as all the latest technical achievements were used for the construction so that the most complex audio-visual effects and scenery could be used in the plays. Another distinctive detail is a giant onyx wall which is visible from outside and beautifully illuminated.

Mikhalovsky Theatre

Mikhailovsky Theatre is the second largest musical theatre in St. Petersburg. The theatre was named after the brother of the Russian emperor Nicholas II - Mikhail.

Here the king of waltzes Johann Strauss completed his 30-year St. Petersburg seasons with the operetta "The Gypsy Baron". The spirit of creativity and the high theatrical culture were brought here by outstanding musicians, opera and ballet figures, including director Vsevolod Meyerhold, the great Fyodor Shalyapin etc. The theatre hosted world premieres of the greatest operas of the 20th century, including "Katerina Izmailova" and "The Nose" by Dmitry Shostakovich, "War and Peace" by Sergei Prokofiev etc.

Today the repertoire of the theatre includes world classic operas and ballets: "The Swan Lake", "The Nutcracker”, "Don Quixote”, "Boris Godunov”, "Romeo and Juliet” etc.

Hermitage Theatre

Hermitage Theatre was opened as a theatre in 1785 for Catherine the Great. The whole European and Russian repertoire of the 18th century was staged in this theatre. After Catherine the Great’s death, in 1796, it ceased its performances. All attempts to restore the theatre in the 19th century were unsuccessful. In 1989, after the reconstruction of the Hermitage Theatre it was opened again. Now Russian ballet stars perform here again. The decoration of the theatre belongs to the imperial epoque and lets the spectators feel like tsars and tsarinas.

Alexandrinsky Theatre

Alexandrinsky Theatre was constructed under the project of K. Rossi, in 1832, and is an architectural masterpiece of the 19th century. The theatre was named after the wife of the emperor Nicholas II - Alexandra. In the beginning the theatre was staging ballets, operas, and dramas.

Presently, the theatre is restoring this tradition. Although it is called the drama theatre, ballet and opera are performed here again.

Moscow

Bolshoi Theatre

Established in 1776, it is the main stage of Russia where the audience has the opportunity to see the famous ballets and operas by great Russian composers: the Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky, the Snow Maiden by Rimsky-Korsakov, the Khovanshchina by Musorgsky, and others. And not the less popular theatre masterpieces created by European composers such as the Flying Dutchman by Wagner, the Turandot and Madam Butterfly by Puccini or the Magic Flute and Don Giovanni by Mozart. The repertoire of the Bolshoi Theatre changes dynamically with no fear of experiments and novelties. The sophisticated interiors of the theatre are the true gem itself.

Moscow Circus

The classical traditions of circus art, world fame and monumentality are perhaps the three distinguishing features of the Moscow Сircus. Each season the Сircus presents a new program, and in December a special New Year's performance is staged. Performances include clowning, acrobatics, balancing act, gymnastics, juggling, eccentricity, illusionism, pantomime, animal training and also the area that has recently experienced a rebirth - fire-eating. A visit to the Moscow Circus is a great way to see the traditional circus art. And besides, children love it so much!

Russian National Dance Show «Kostroma»

The plot of the show is the history of Russia from old times to the present moment and the multicultural traditions of our country, presented in national dances and songs.
