EXHIBITION-STUDY OF THE OLD BELIEVER CULTURE PRESENTED AT THE MOSCOW MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

23 March 2022

An exposition Right of Faith opened at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art on the 22nd of March. It is part of the museum’s project Photo/Commentary, dedicated to contemporary Russian photography. The program includes personal exhibitions of authors that use photography to comprehend social processes.

This exhibition is a visual study of modern Old Believers. This is the first such project in more than 100 years. Solo and group portraits of Old Believers of different ages and statuses are complemented by interviews with representatives of different communities and descendants of Old Believers. The project refers to the first photographic portraits of the Old Believers of the 19th century. Despite its exploratory nature, Right of Faith does not attempt to classify the life of closed communities. The artist speaks "on the themes of self-determination, the struggle for one's own beliefs and the preservation of identity in the era of globalization" through interest, openness and contact with representatives of a unique culture, the museum added.
