Italy became the winner of the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship. The Italian team beat England in the final game which was held at Wembley Stadium in London. The whole tournament took place from 11 June to 11 July, 2021. The European Championship was planned for 2020 but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Italy's team has become two-time European football champion, beating England on the penalties in the UEFA EURO 2020 final. The main time of the match, which took place on Sunday, 11 July, ended with a 1:1 score. The Italians, headed by Roberto Mancini, won seven out of seven matches at UEFA EURO 2020, two of them on penalties and one in extra time.St. Petersburg was among 11 European cities that hosted the EURO 2020. Here, in addition to the games between Russia, Belgium and Finland, three more matches were held with the participation of teams from Group E - Poland, Slovakia and Sweden, as well as the match of Group B Finland - Belgium and the quarterfinals Switzerland - Spain. A total of 132,752 spectators attended the seven EURO 2020 matches in St. Petersburg. The figure would have been higher, but the occupancy rate of the stadium was limited to 50% due to the coronavirus pandemic.
One of the tasks of EURO 2020 was to send a message to the whole world about an imminent victory over the coronavirus. The European Championship was the first major sports event since the outbreak of the pandemic, where enough spectators were allowed to the matches so that the stadiums did not seem deserted. Despite the massive restrictions, festive atmosphere reigned in the cities of EURO 2020.
