DAY 2. VILNIUS
HD Walking city tour / Duration - 4 hours.
Breakfast
Founded in 1323 on the banks of the Neris and Vilna rivers by Grand Duke Gediminas, the city has been a crossroads and a center of commerce for many centuries. Hansa merchants have passed through this city as well as the different invaders who have occupied the country throughout its long history: Germans, Poles, Swedes, Russians... Vilnius was also the headquarters of Napoleon's French armies in their attempt to invade Russia. This multicultural influence has left its mark both on the architecture of the city with Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical buildings, as well as on the diversity of its churches. Orthodox bulbous domes alternate with the tall arrows and colonnades of Catholic and Protestant churches. The historic center of Vilnius has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. During the walking tour we will admire the Art Nouveau buildings on Gediminas Avenue and the Synagogue, the center of the once flourishing Jewish community of Vilnius. We will see the imposing neoclassical Vilnius Cathedral, the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, the Church of Saint Anne, the oldest church of Lithuania – the Church of Saint Nicholas, the Doors of Dawn and the neighboring Orthodox Cathedral.
OPTIONAL: In the afternoon we offer an optional visit to Trakai Castle / Duration - 4 hours. Trakai is located a few kilometers from Vilnius and has been declared a national park, both for the natural beauty of its lakes and forests, and for the historical importance of this place. It was the seat of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the capital of the country during the Middle Ages. The imposing castle is a magnificent construction dating back to the 13th century, located on a small island in the center of an idyllic lake, whose waters reflect the silhouette of its high red brick walls and slender towers. The lake is surrounded by the spruce and birch forests of Trakai National Park. Transfer back to the hotel in Vilnius.
