12 April 2021

This week we are celebrating the International Day of Human Space Flight. This day is a special day for our country - a day of pride, as on April 12, 1961, a citizen of the Soviet Union, Yuri Gagarin, for the first time in the world made an orbital flyby of the Earth, opening the era of manned space flights.

HD Visit to the Central Market + Walking tour of the city of Riga / Duration - 4 hours.

Riga Central Market is the largest market in the Baltic States and one of the largest in Europe. Inaugurated in 1930, it was the largest architectural project in Latvia of its time, an imposing construction of 5 large Art Nouveau naves in the heart of Riga. Up to this day this market is very popular and farmers from all over the country sell their different merchandise here: vegetables, fruits, berries, charcuterie, meat, fish, cheeses etc. An excellent opportunity to discover the daily life of Riga, as well as the rich local products.

Then we will continue with the walking tour of Riga city. Riga is the largest of the three Baltic capitals. The city was founded in 1201 on the banks of the Daugava River and in the 13th century became an important commercial center of the German Hansa. Known as the "Paris of the Baltic States", it stands out for the beauty of its old town where all architectural styles are mixed: Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Classic, Art Nouveau, etc. The guided tour will take us through the most interesting places of this ancient Hanseatic city. We will start from the central boulevards of Riga and then will see the Arsenal Tower, the National Theater, the Freedom Monument, the Opera House, the University of Riga and the bridges over the Daugava River. Once we reach the old town we will see the Dome Cathedral (entrance), the Church of S. Pedro, the Old medieval Castle, the house of Blackheads, the buildings of the old guilds, the Bridge of the Swedes, the Three Brothers, the Parliament and many other buildings converted into restaurants, pubs and souvenir shops.

OPTIONAL: In the afternoon we offer an optional visit to the Ethnographic Open Air Museum of Latvia / Duration - 3 hours. We will visit one of the masterpieces of Latvian cultural heritage. Founded in 1924, it is located 10 km from Riga, in a pine forest by the shore of Lake Jugla. The museum consists of about 90 traditional rural buildings, farms, windmills, churches, fishermen's huts, etc., from the four Latvian provinces: Kurzeme, Vidzeme, Latéale and Zemgale.
