ONE OF THE MOST VISITED MUSEUMS IN MOSCOW

17 February 2026

The State Historical Museum on Red Square consistently remains one of the most visited museums in Moscow. And it's no wonder! It is a prominent Moscow landmark and a significant cultural treasure. Its rich and diverse collection comprises over four million exhibits, spanning history from prehistoric times to the late 19th century.

Tretiakov Galery

The history of this museum dates back to 1860 when an entrepreneur Pavel Tretiakov started to buy objects of art for the decoration of halls and rooms of his Moscow house. Every year he bought dozens of new works of art at the exhibitions and in the studios of Russian artists. Very soon in 1872 he had to order to build a separate building next to his house to store the growing collection. The museum was transferred to Moscow in 1892. Today the collection that numbers more than 100.000 pieces can illustrate the development of Russian art from its origins till the 20th century, i.e. from anonymous Russian icons to the paintings signed by Kandinsky and Malevich.
