Tourist Visa

To apply for a visa in a consulate you need to provide the following documents:

  • Passport valid for at least next 6 months;
  • 1 photo (color or black and white) 3x4sm. The photo should not be older than 6 month prior to applying for the visa;
  • Copy of the first page of the passport with personal data of the applicant. If a child is included in the passport and he or she is travelling with the applicant a copy of the page with the child’s data is also required;
  • 1 visa application form filled out in Russian, English, or Mongolian and signed personally by the applicant. The application form should be filled out in block letters with a black of blue pen;
  • An invitation from the host party (hotel or travel company officially registered in the territory of Mongolia). The invitation from the host party should be sent by fax dirctroy to the consulate on the day the application for the visa is filed. It is desirable (not obligatory) to have a copy of the invitation with you;
  • For children you need to have a copy of birth certificates.

Transit Visa

Transit without visa through the territory of Mongolia is allowed in the cases when you need to change international flights in the course of 24 hours and do not plan to leave the transit zone.  At that it is necessary to have tickets confirming you future flight and a visa to the country of destination if such is required.  This rule applies to Russian citizens. 

In the case you are planning to travel to a third country through the territory of Mongolia by railroad or the time between your flights exceeds 24 hours and you are planning to leave the airport you need to have a transit vis.  To apply for the transit visa the following documents are required:

  • Passport valid for at least next 6 months;
  • 1 photo (color or black and white) 3x4sm. The photo should not be older than 6 month prior to applying for the visa;
  • Copy of the first page of the passport with personal data of the applicant. If a child is included in the passport and he or she is travelling with the applicant a copy of the page with the child’s data is also required;
  • 1 visa application form filled out in Russian, English, or Mongolian and signed personally by the applicant. The application form should be filled out in block letters with a black of blue pen;
  • Plane or train tickets to the place of destination (or its copies) or a confirmation of reservation of the tickets.

Visa validity

The term of validity of tourist visa is 3 months from the day of issue, the period of staying in the country is 30 days.  Transit visas give you a right to stay in the country for 48 or 72 hours. 

Time of visa procurement

The standard period of visa procurement is 5 work days.  You can also have the visa issued in one work day, but the amount of the consulate fee is doubled. 

Visa extension

In the case of necessity you can extend you tourist visa in the territory of Mongolia for another 30 days.  In this case you need to apply to the Foreigners Affairs Division at least a week prior to your visa expiry date.  It is necessary to provide an application filled out in Russian or English, 1 photo, copy of the first page of your passport and the pages with the valid visa, and an application stating the reasons for extending your stay in the country.  The fee for a 30 days visa is 60 US Dollars, and additional fee of 5000MNT (=$4.0) is charged for processing your application. 

Transit visas or entry visas issues for less than 14 days cannot be extended in the territory of the country.

Staying in the country regulations

In 10 days after entering Mongolia (before the departure) you need to register in the local militia. 

Who is required to have a visa to Mongolia?

Citizens of the USA, Kazakhstan, Israel, Gong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore are not required to have a visa to enter Mongolia.
