The city of Ekaterinburg is considered to by the economic and cultural centre of the Ural Region of Russia. Peter the Great founded Yekaterinburg and named it after his wife Catherine. In the soviet times Yekaterinburg was closed for foreigners and it was “opened” again only in December 1991. This city is also infamous for the fact that it was here, in 1918, that the last Russian Emperor Nicolas II and his family were murdered. You should visit the Military Museum exhibiting the armours designed and manufactured in Yekaterinburg in including the famous T-34 and “Katjusha”, which is the famous missile launcher. Being the geographical centre of a huge country the city is situated on two continents Europe and Asia. Many people from all continents come here to see the monument (25 miles out of Yekaterinburg) with the signs “Europe” on one side and “Asia” on the other.
